4 Quick Lighting Tips For Any Space

Have you ever heard the term, lighting is everything? Well it is, especially when it comes to room design. Use a combination of lighting sources to maximize function and set the tone.

1. Choose high-quality fixtures.

A quality made light fixture lasts longer and looks better. Think of your light fixture as you would a piece of furniture. Consider the materials used, construction and style. The goal is to bring beauty, functionality and utmost quality of lighting into your space.

2. Consider your room’s paint color.

Paint can change the look and feel of a room. The paint color can vary depending on the light source, whether natural, artificial or both. When using artificial light, it’s important to consider the type of bulb. Incandescent bulbs provide a warm light, fluorescent bulbs give off a cool light, and halogen light is mostly white and gives the closest approximation of natural light. Check your color samples with the light in the room throughout the day to see how the colors look. Furnishings and objects in the room also affect the look and feel because they absorb and reflect light in various ways.

3. Be creative.

Lights can also be used as design elements instead of wall art. Think of light fixtures as studded gems. They can easily dress a room, wall, hallway or stairway. For instance, wall sconces can be used to add character and illumination to a wall instead of traditional ceiling lights. Don’t forget to consider the materials and finishes used, such as crystal and nickel, to complement any style from traditional to modern.

4.  Combat shadows and glare.

Trying to illuminate your space with one or two intensely bright ceiling fixtures can create shadows and glare. Instead, use various layers of light such as ambient, task and accent lighting to provide levels of varied brightness. You can reduce glare by selecting flat or satin floor and wall finishes instead of gloss or metallic.
