Layering Light in the Master Bath
STYLE SPOTLIGHT: MASTER BATH IDEAS
The master bath is where you start your day and the last place you’ll be before going to bed. Our most personal hygiene practices happen here; however, this room tends to be the most overlooked lighting scheme in the home. This space is where we should feel the most relaxed and comfortable in our skin.
The right bathroom lighting will dramatically create a sense of balance and comfort when performing your daily beauty rituals. When putting together a design plan, it is essential to layer light so that you properly illuminate your tasks and relaxation. Bathrooms require four types of light that include task lighting, ambient lighting, decorative lighting, and accent lighting. Layering light will ensure that the room is not too dim or overly bright.
TASK LIGHTING Task lighting is one of the essential forms of light in the bathroom. Focus task lighting first on the sink and mirror. Another area to consider will be the bath and shower if you have a larger bathroom. A pair of sconces flanking either side of the mirror provides even cross lighting and shadowless illumination. Put your task lighting on dimmers so your eyes can adjust first thing in the morning.
AMBIENT LIGHTING Ambient light is the overall lighting of the space. This type of illumination softens the shadows and balances the area from the focused task lighting. Common task lights include ceiling mounts, pendants, and small chandeliers.
DECORATIVE LIGHTING Adding a statement chandelier over the tub can add that finishing touch to the room that makes the space feel luxurious. Decorative lighting can enhance the experience of the overall design.
ACCENT LIGHTING Accent lighting is used when you want to highlight an area of architectural interest or accentuate a piece of art. Common accent lights include sconces, pendant lights, and spotlights.
