Room Reveal: Decorating a Grandmillennial Style Bedroom
For Laura’s second go-around in the One Room Challenge, she decided to update her guest bedroom. “I knew immediately I wanted to design the room in a grandmillennial style. I have grown to love this blend of old and new and have been wanting to incorporate it more into our house,” says Laura. With more people embracing this granny chic style, we asked Laura to share her tips on how to decorate with grandmillieanial style.
What attracts you to this style of design?
There are so many reasons I love this style. The biggest is that this style helps you create something, unlike everyone else. I never want my home to look like hundreds of others on Instagram. I want it to feel like me and be what I love. I want to feel happy and inspired, and grandmillennial does just that. I love the patterns, textures, and colors and how it feels so well curated when done right. I love mixing in antiques, whether that be family items or something from a shop. It gives you that one of a kind look that feels special.
What type of lighting mixes well with this style
You can use all different sorts of lighting! I would say golds, white, and crystal blend in best. Add wall sconces or picture lighting as a great way to take it up another level.
Why did you select these fixtures for the bedroom?
Besides being gorgeous, they felt right on theme. The Nina has these beautiful scallops that are very grandmillennial and in a matte white finish that is so fresh! The Marshall sconces are traditional in design but very functional and pretty. They work as task and mood light and make the design feel well balanced.
What is the secret to mixing old and new?
My biggest tip is for each old piece I use, I like to accompany it with two new pieces: an antique dresser with contemporary art and a new lamp. This doesn’t have to be exact every time, but this is an excellent rule for beginners learning to blend
Any do and don’t to getting this look?
Have fun, make it feel special, take risks! Don’t try to make it look like everyone else. Inspiration is essential but add your spin on it!
