Designer’s Predict Kitchen Trends You'll Be Seeing in 2021

Our kitchens have been working overtime as the main command center in our home. Being the hub of the home for cooking, family time, homework, zoom calls, and more, it's a great location for a refresh or upgrades in 2021. We asked top designers to predict what we will see in 2021. From oversized fixtures to zellige tile to bold colors, it's all about making personal touches that make it your own.

MIXING METAL finishes

“Kitchens truly are the heart of the home, and during the challenges of 2020, kitchens became even more vital to our daily lives. In 2021, we will continue to break up kitchens into highly-functional zones specific to your family’s needs–think smoothie stations, coffee bars, wine bottle storage, and butler’s pantry. I feel that people will be more inclined to adding warmth with stained wood finishes, infusing more color, and mixing metal finishes through lighting selections, cabinetry hardware, and even appliance finishes, says designer Kelli Fontana Vogelgesang of @WESTBAYHOMES.

Oversized Fixtures

“In 2021, we will see islands becoming even larger, sometimes taking the place of a kitchen table altogether. This means the perfect canvas for even more beautiful lighting fixtures! The days of 3 mini pendant lights are long gone. I love to use two larger fixtures, even chandelier size, when applicable. These fixtures will provide excellent task lighting as well as gorgeous eye candy to complete your kitchen design,” says Lauren Nicole.

Creating Warmth

“While white kitchens will always be a classic, bringing in wood cabinetry, whether in the island, pantry, or sink areas, can really warm up the space. Zellige tile is here to stay not only is it available in gorgeous colors, but the uniqueness of each tile due to it being handcrafted also gives so much texture and interest to the space while still remaining neutral,” says Jessica Koltun.

Bespoke Kitchen

"We will see more tailored kitchens with a bespoke, UK vibe. Kitchen's that feel more like decorative lived-in rooms rather than a task space. Lamps on countertops, scones above open-shelving, and even farm tables in place of kitchen islands,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

COLOR IS KING

"Color will be king in kitchens going into 2021. People will be making bold choices painting kitchen islands and lower cabinetry primary colors (think red, green, and cobalt blue) in high gloss finishes. We are also going to keep seeing more kitchen appliances, lighting, plumbing, and cabinet hardware in brass, this is a trend we've seen for a while, but manufacturers are seeing that it has staying power as a design detail, and people want to live with a brass finish, so that means on permanent kitchen products," says designer Libby Langdon of Libby Langdon Interiors.

Pattern

“We think we will finally, FINALLY, see a movement away from the all-white sterile and utilitarian kitchen. Our kitchens saw A LOT of us in 2020, and it’s time to infuse more personality into these workhorse rooms with color and pattern and generally treating it as if it another room as opposed to just a place to cook and eat,” says Jessica Geller of Toledo Geller.
