A HIGH-STYLE FUN & MOODY GAMEROOM REVEAL

We were so excited when Susan Hill reached out to us to collaborate on her game room transformation for the One Room Challenge. Susan Hill, the CEO and Principal Designer of Susan Hill Interior Design, was one of the twenty featured designers who took on the challenge to transform a room in six weeks. “The plan was to marry the wants and aesthetic of my teenager with the aesthetic of the rest of the house and create something that all of us would love to be in,” says Susan.

MEET DESIGNER SUSAN HILL

Susan Hill is the CEO and Principal Designer of Susan Hill Interior Design, an award-winning build/design firm based in Charlotte, NC. Susan believes in a "function first" approach to design, in which each space is programmed around her client's lifestyles and businesses. This practicality is married with a commitment to a clean, collected perspective, influenced by her extensive travels worldwide.

A FUNCTIONAL FOUNDATION TO DESIGN

"My aesthetic morphs with my family; however, since I believe in a functional foundation to design and employ the design principles, I try to stick with clean lines in my own home using a classic foundation to create layers. I work all day intently on client projects, so, at the end of the day, I can't come home to a space that is overwhelming for me," says Susan. Working with saturated soft colors, texture, and comfort helps Susan calm her brain at the end of a busy day.

PLAYROOM TO GAMEROOM

Susan’s playroom had now become outdated for her teenage daughters. The room needed a complete overhaul to make the space ideal for gaming. “My daughter’s major requests was a comfy sectional with lots of room for friends, soft flooring, ottoman and pillows, led lighting (a must), and a snack bar. The absolute for me was soundproofing so I can sleep at night with teenagers in the next room. We accomplished that by adding Rockwool in the adjoining wall between the rooms and installing surround sound that moved the sound to the opposite side of the room,” says Susan.

MOODY COLOR PALETTE

Susan designed a monochromatic room that was moody. "My youngest daughter has sensory issues, and saturated, soothing spaces help her decompress. She wanted dark charcoal, and I wanted something that worked with the rest of our home, so the terracotta tones worked perfectly. Layering in monochromatic pillows, adding a touch of gray, and implementing natural finishes kept it fresh, says Susan.

Getting the LIGHTING RIGHT

Susan knew right away she wanted texture and the Jessa pendant was a perfect fit. “Lighting is such an essential part of all of any projects. We consider it to be the jewelry in the room; if you get it wrong, it can throw the whole vibe off. Susan and her team of designers make sure to consider the finish and the entire aesthetic flow of the home when selecting lighting. If they are working on a project that needs to feel elevated, a high polished fixture helps do that for the space. To make a space feel layered, she looks for a finish and fixture with a matte finish and perhaps texture on the glass..

Favorite Feature

"I love that my girls want to be in the room now; we all do. That's my favorite part of creating this space. I also added dimmers, and I love that we can control the level of light. The feature wall has to be a top contender in the list of favorites, the texture on the Jessa Pendant that ties in so well to the wood accents, and the monochromatic pillows."
