Meet Sanda

Sanda Stojakovic studied political science with a master in public administration and currently works for a tech company. After college, she became obsessed with interior design. Her husbands' background is in construction management, so it was easy to support her desire for renovations and DIY projects.

Home Library design plans

The room they selected to transform was the formal living room nobody used and the largest space in Sanda’s home. This room began to get used as a dumping ground for decor. “I always wanted a home library, and the idea of having a place to sit, relax and read a book was top of mind. My must have’s included custom built-ins, decorative crown molding, wainscoting, and patterned wallpaper,” says Sanda.

Selecting the right art

“My best advice is to choose from the heart. We all try to follow certain design rules when decorating a space, but with art, we should lead with our intuition and choose the piece that makes our hearts flutter. Art is a form of expression, unique to each individual, so there is no wrong answer here. If you are not sure what type of art you love, buy prints from a variety of styles and hang an eclectic gallery wall.”

Mixing patterns and colors

“I love to play with colors and patterns, and I try first to figure out the goal for the room. I then pick a fabric and work around that fabric. It was essential for me to design a vibrant room even in the gloomiest of Chicago days for this project. Having spent most of my life in the sunny states of Texas and California, I quickly became aware of how gloomy days and long winters can affect our mood.”

STATEMENT LIGHTING

"You don't want a light fixture to be too small or too large for space. There is a formula I sometimes like to follow to find the right diameter of a light fixture. If the fixture is lighting the whole room, you can use the room's length and width, add those numbers together and convert it to inches. For example, if your room is 10ft x 10ft, then that would be 10in + 10in = 20 inches, meaning the fixture should be 20 inches in diameter."

Layering light

“I like to layer light the way you would layer patterns or textures. Instead of having one light fixture to illuminate a room, I try to use at least 2-3 light sources, including sconces, lamps, and chandeliers. I like to use ambient, accent, and tasks lighting for optimal appeal.”
