Why Globe Lights will Never go out of Style
Globe lights are one of the most sought-after lighting styles that continue to grow in popularity each year. This classic style light is a cult favorite among mid-century devotees but recently has become desirable with mainstream buyers for homes, businesses, and newly designed restaurants.
The style blossomed across the country throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The globe light became popular by Joseph Eichler, an accomplished California real estate developer who collaborated with architects to build over 11,000 homes from 1949 to 1961, all designed with globe lighting. These A-frame style homes all featured open floor plans, rooms filled with natural light, and a strong connection to nature.
The globe light became known to illuminate a mid-century California relaxed vibe but has transcended the trend to have true staying power in today's homes and businesses. "Globe lighting is a classic choice for literally any home. They can simply offer a mid-century modern flair to a space by using a white cafe-style globe or a more traditional vibe with a clear globe, warm brass details, and candelabra bulbs. It is such a versatile choice of lighting, says Katie Kurtz, Owner, Principal Designer, and Realtor of Adorned Homes."
The Truax collection by Brian Patrick Flynn for Crystorama is modern and classic with a retro charm. This eye-pleasing pedant can stand alone or look great lined up over a kitchen island. "Ever since I started designing spaces, I've been drawn to perfectly round light fixtures since they break up the rectilinearity of a room; the curvature is a nice juxtaposition and adds a little softness. I love the simplicity of a globe pendant and the graphic silhouette it creates. And the even light output it adds to a room is super flattering," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.
Globe lighting is so popular due to its simple, clean silhouette and ease of incorporating it in many types of homes. Tanya Nayak, Interior Designer and Owner of Boston-based Taniya Nayak Design, Inc. and on-air HGTV, Food Network, and ABC TV design expert, use globe pendants in many of her restaurant projects. “The spherical shape is soothing to the eye. It can be associated with a classic design style and is equally matched by a modern aesthetic. The globe lighting look adds something special to everyone’s design style. I love to use a globe pendant in my restaurant designs, specifically over a bar or booth table. In a home, this style is perfect over a kitchen island or hanging in a corner over an accent chair as a replacement for a floor or table lamp. As “punny” as this may be the globe pendant is a universal look,” says Tanya Nayak.
